Description of NodMetaphysics here. I think this supports everything has happened. If you see a contradiction, let me know -- this is written from the point of view of a highly informed, very tolerant legalist.
This page is to describe how magic works.
Zeroeth: this is not common knowledge, even among those who are experts on such things, and is not inherently obvious even if "all the information" is known.
First: magic comes from the divine.
Second: it is through our virtues that we approach the divine.
Third: Myths are the primary key to teaching virtues, to being virtuous, and to tapping the power of magic.
Most people learn their virtues through the common practices of their culture, and the myths of their cultural religion. Through this, they have access -- some access -- to common magic.
On the PathOfRevelation, the myths give a sense, a kind of kinesthetic map to the place where you can reach out and touch the face of God. These "maps" are worked into the soul, in the virtues, behaviours, etc. that are outlined in the revelatory symbols. Only those who have become Teachers of those symbols have internalized enough to find that magic, in the place of deepest discovery. It's still hit-or-miss -- the "instructions" contained in the myths are contradictory and incomplete. On the other hand, they understand instinctively the fundamental foundation of worship...once the myth has brought them to the Revelation, it is discarded in favor of the pure divine.
This means that magic is kept soley in the hands of those who can master the nonrational art of finding that deeply touching magic in the place-beyond. Only they can learn lessons, make charms, or, for those who feel The Call of a driving vision, the capacity to draw forth the most powerful Dreams and catch them. They must find their magic alone, even if it can be shared with others.
On the PathOfIncarnation, the myths teach a way of living -- each Incarnate is living out the myth of their own development, informed strongly by the themes and myths of the IncarnateFigure that they follow. Each develops his or her own magic out of living a mythic life. Each thus develops their magic individually.
Those on the PathOfTheLaw have discovered that, for many virtues (and myths) it is far easier to maintain a proper mode of life with the support of everyone around you. Myths are easiers to believe and accept when the act in accordance with natural laws, and are standardised, rather than polymorphic. Collections of folkways are formed into Scriptures which unite not families, but cities, nations. Myths are formed to support the perfect Healer, Soldier, Scholar...using information gleaned from the lives of those who are holy, and from the study of basic mythic principles. Grimoires are in may ways the pinnacle of the law: all the rules, the distilled principles of the symbolic and physical nature of something, encoded in the creation of a new monomyth. Everything can be unfolded from these, with sufficient understanding. Grimoires encode the compacted laws of nature, as best they are understood by man.
Now, from the point of view of Legalists, Religion is far too important to leave in the hands of the few. There is no assurance of continuity, from generation to generation. People only achieve a full closeness to God if they happen to be one of the few, or are touched by one of the few, and there's no assurance that these channels will remain open once a teacher dies. Likewise, Incarnation scatters in many directions, and there is no assurance that the "parts of the family," so to speak, will work as a harmonious whole. Friction is expected...sometimes even encouraged.
To be fair, the strict Revelationist feels that the incarnate is too narrow in view, using only the self as a metaphore for God, and that the legalist does everything by rote -- never able to escape the need for a teacher, never able to touch anything directly by themselves. Incarnates often also share the view that legalists are doing it "by the books" rather than actually getting in touch, in some "viceral" way, with the Divine...and often contend that the Revelatory are fundamentally crazy, trying to reach out and bring into themselves that which they are not. Both paths are seen by the Incarnates as being far to wrapped up in their "toys," given that incarnates pride themselves on their direct connection to the divine, needing nothing but their own bodies and souls to work their magics.
On the topic of the Lilim. Those who are discended from the "first woman" display a suprising versatility by eschewing theological specialization in all its forms. Some pay no attention to deeper spiritual concerns; others, in contrast, feel that being tied down to one of the three outlines placed here, with the reliance on Wizardry towers, intermediary symbols to channel the mind, or the footsteps of an IncarnateFigure, is accepting an unnecessary crutch. Finally, some believe fervently in the universality of magic, stating over and over that "all paths lead to the One God" and thus insist on treading all paths with equal depth...or shallowness, as the case may be. Regardless, the Lilim's capability for delving as powerfully as they do into facets of magic form all three paths represents an fundamental willingness to improvise without form...to accept there being no overriding paradigm, for good or for ill, without a second thought.
Finally, something should be said about those who focus on "hybrid ways."
There are some means that allow a person to focus, not on a single path, but on a combination of a path and ... something else. Whereas the discimple of concentration typically limits you to only magic of that path, which then comes more easily, this "hybrid concentration" allows a soul to, by surrendering all magic, regardless of path, that does not fit within their Way, keep all other magic and retain (or gain) a particular capability with one of the three modes that is present within that Way. There a instances of individuals dedicated to Enoch, either through the universal law-myths of the legalists, or through the internal drive of the Incarnate, capable of being a daughter or son (so long as it was of an enochian figure) and a wizard (of an Enochian school) while maintaining a protection against all things outside their path-and-Way. The Avatar of Enoch is the only known repeatable instance of such MagicalConcentration -- the internal forms necessary for such dedication are poorly understood at best.
Still stranger are the few who seem to dedicate themselves to a Way without a Path. Although they do not benefit from the ease that comes from a pure mind and spirit, their focus does provide defense against those who attempt to affect them from without their chosen paradigm.
